On Tuesday, the United Nations confirmed the US' formal notification of its withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement.

The UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a news conference: "The US has notified the Secretary-General (Antonio Guterres), in his capacity as a depository, of its withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on January 27 of this year."

US President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the climate agreement in 2019, before former President Joe Biden led the US to make a return to the agreement.

However, Trump signed an executive order to withdraw the US from the agreement after his inauguration.

The Paris agreement was signed by the US on April 22, 2016, according to Dujarric, adding: "However, the country withdrew on November 4, 2020, before rejoining on February 19, 2021."

"According to Article 28, paragraph two, of the Paris agreement, the withdrawal of the United States will take effect on January 27, 2026," he added.

He concluded that the UN asserted the global commitment to climate action, and said: "We reaffirm our commitment to the Paris Agreement and support all effective efforts to limit the rise in global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius."
