The United Nations will allocate nearly $60 million in emergency funding to help contain the Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of the Congo, while deploying additional personnel to the affected region.
UN emergency relief coordinator Tom Fletcher warned that the outbreak must be contained quickly due to ongoing conflict and heavy population movement in eastern Congo.
Health experts believe the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which currently has no approved vaccine — spread undetected for nearly two months in Ituri province before being identified last week.
The outbreak has so far resulted in around 160 deaths among 670 suspected cases, raising concerns about wider regional transmission.
