Ukrainian Ambassador in Cairo Announces Global Peace Summit Scheduled for the First Half of This Year

The Ukrainian Ambassador to Cairo, Mykola Nahorny, has announced plans for a global peace summit to be held in the first half of this year, amidst the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Nahorny emphasized that Russia initiated the conflict with Ukraine a decade ago, with its invasion starting on February 19, 2014, targeting the eastern provinces and the Crimean Peninsula in Donetsk and Luhansk.

During a press conference at the embassy in Cairo, marking two years since the escalation of the conflict, the ambassador highlighted the widespread suffering caused by the war, including political, economic, and demographic tragedies, with consequences that will be felt for decades.

The ambassador stressed the tangible losses not only to the Ukrainian people but to the global community, as the world begins to comprehend the war's repercussions on the economy, food security, energy sector, and humanitarian aspects.

Nahorny pointed out that the conflict in Ukraine has also impacted global political stability and the stability of other regions, indicating that conflicts in Africa and the Middle East are extensions of the war initiated by Russia in 2014.

He criticized Russia for violating international agreements and norms, undermining respect for international law, state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and posing a continuous threat of force.

As the second anniversary of the unjust and inhumane war approaches, Nahorny reaffirmed Ukraine's goal to regain its entire territory, contrasting Russia's ambitions to occupy Ukraine and install a pro-Russian government against the will of the Ukrainian people.

Recent statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin, denying the existence of the Ukrainian people and state, were highlighted as evidence of Russia's intention to annex Ukraine entirely and assimilate its population. Nahorny cited Russia's conduct of referendums in Ukrainian territories and constitutional amendments to support this claim.

The ambassador warned that if these attempts are not thwarted, Russia's next targets could be the Caucasus, Central Asia, or the Baltic states, urging Western allies to recognize that Ukraine is merely the first step in a broader Russian agenda.

Ukraine seeks to end the war as soon as possible, with President Zelensky proposing a peace formula consisting of ten main points aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine.

To prepare for the global peace summit, four meetings at the level of national security advisors from various countries have taken place, with the latest involving over 80 countries and international organizations. The summit, to be held in Switzerland, aims to establish nine committees to develop programs and action plans for each point of the Ukrainian peace formula, with the participation of government and state leaders, co-hosted by the presidents of Switzerland and Ukraine.

The ambassador expressed hope for Russian participation in the second global summit, based on the work of these committees, emphasizing that the war benefits neither Ukraine, Russia, nor the global community.
