The US ambassador to Ukraine, Kristina Kvien, warned on Sunday that Russia's invasion of Ukraine would be "disastrous".
"Ultimately, Putin must make a decision not to choose this path, which would be disastrous," Kvien said in televised remarks, reported by the American newspaper "The Hill".
The US diplomat stressed that Russia and Ukraine would suffer severe repercussions after the Russian invasion, adding that both countries would see casualties and Moscow would face "devastating sanctions" from the US and allied countries.
She added that it would be catastrophic for Ukraine, of course, with the potential for thousands of casualties, but Russia would also suffer losses in the war, in addition to the sanctions.
It is worth mentioning that US President Joe Biden agreed ‘in principle’ to hold a summit with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, as long as Russia does not further invade Ukraine, the White House announced on Monday.
In a statement, the White House stressed that Washington is ready to impose serious sanctions on Moscow if it chooses war.
"Russia appears to be continuing preparations for an imminent full-scale assault on Ukraine," the statement read.
Moreover, the White House pointed out that the US President will participate on Thursday in a virtual meeting with G7 leaders on the Ukraine-Russia crisis.
The proposal was announced by the French presidency after two phone calls between President Emmanuel Macron and Putin, which went on for almost three hours in total.
