The United Kingdom and Ukraine signed a £2.26 billion loan agreement on Saturday to support Kyiv's defense capabilities, in what London described as a sign of its steadfast and continued support for the Ukrainian people.

The two countries' finance ministers Rachel Reeves and Serhiy Marchenko signed the loan agreement in a virtual ceremony via video conference as Prime Minister Keir Starmer met President Volodymyr Zelensky in London.

The loan will be repaid from surplus frozen Russian sovereign assets.

Marchenko wrote on social media abroad that the money was "secured by frozen Russian assets".

He added that he was "grateful" to the UK for "holding the aggressor accountable in the war".

On his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had held "important and friendly" talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and discussed strengthening Ukraine's position and obtaining reliable security guarantees.

"During our talks, we discussed the challenges facing Ukraine and Europe as a whole, coordination with our partners, and concrete steps to strengthen Ukraine's position and end the war in a just manner, with reliable security guarantees," Zelensky wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

During their tenth meeting of its kind between Starmer and Zelensky in Downing Street, the British Prime Minister affirmed the United Kingdom's full support for Ukraine.

This support comes as relations between Zelensky and the US administration deteriorated during the extraordinary meeting in the world of politics and diplomacy and its embarrassing events.

In a scene unprecedented in the history of global diplomacy, Trump and his Vice President Jay D. Vance shouted at Zelensky, accusing him of not showing "gratitude" and refusing to accept the terms of the proposed peace.
