Ukrainian officials say chaos in Russia plays into Kiev's hands, but it remains unclear whether President Volodymyr Zelensky and his country's military can capitalize on the unrest over the weekend when fighters from Russia's private military group Wagner headed toward Moscow.

“Today the world saw the masters of Russia, and they do not control anything,” Zelensky said in his videotaped speech on Saturday night. nothing at all. Just complete chaos," he said, imploring Ukraine's allies to seize the moment and send more.

"Any chaos behind enemy lines is in our interest," Ukraine's foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba said.

Kuleba added "it was too early to talk about the consequences of what happened for Ukraine" , but later on Saturday he held a call with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to discuss events and developments in Kiev's counterattack.

The US State Department said in a statement afterward that Washington would remain "in close cooperation" with Kiev as the situation developed.
