in Michalovce, Slovakia, representatives from the Ukrainian and Slovak governments convened to sign a pivotal cooperation roadmap, aimed at enhancing bilateral relations amidst ongoing regional conflicts. This strategic agreement spans several critical areas including energy, defense, and economic cooperation, with commitments to expand infrastructure and facilitate trade.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico emphasized the significance of the gathering, noting the importance of swift and decisive action in international relations. "The lesson from today is that we must put aside fear and prejudice, bring people together, and remove bureaucratic obstacles to make difficult decisions," said Fico. He also urged his ministers to adopt a pragmatic approach when negotiating with Ukrainian counterparts, acknowledging the heavier burdens faced by the Ukrainian government.
A central element of the discussions was the enhancement of energy interconnectivity. The leaders agreed on a plan to improve the infrastructure along the Mukachevo - Veľké Kapušany route, crucial for the diversification of energy sources and reducing reliance on Russian energy supplies. "Energy infrastructure is often targeted in conflicts, and we understand Ukraine's need to secure a reliable electricity supply," Fico highlighted.
The meeting also focused on defense cooperation, particularly in demining Ukrainian territories and exploring the use of specialized excavators. Slovakia confirmed its ongoing support for Ukraine with military supplies on a commercial basis. Discussions extended to the strategic diversification of gas imports to Europe, highlighting the broader implications of their partnership for European energy security.
On the economic front, the discussions addressed the sensitive issue of agricultural trade. Prime Minister Fico assured that Slovakia would provide corridors for Ukrainian agricultural exports but stressed the importance of protecting Slovak agricultural interests. Without a joint resolution, Slovakia would maintain its import ban on 14 specified agricultural products.
The roadmap includes plans to establish a direct railway connection between Kyiv and Košice and to upgrade the Vyšné Nemecké border crossing to increase its capacity. This development is part of a broader initiative to enhance cross-border cooperation and economic integration between the two countries.
Describing the meeting as "highly constructive," Prime Minister Fico reiterated Slovakia's support for Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union and called for an end to the conflict in Ukraine, advocating for a peaceful resolution through international cooperation, including the upcoming summit in Switzerland.
This new cooperation roadmap between Slovakia and Ukraine marks a significant step towards strengthening their bilateral relationship, which is expected to contribute positively to the stability and integration of the wider European region.
