UK Wins Rwanda Asylum Dispute

The UK has won an international arbitration case after a tribunal rejected Rwanda’s claim for compensation linked to the scrapped Rwanda asylum agreement.

The Hague-based tribunal ruled that diplomatic exchanges between the two countries following the election of Prime Minister Keir Starmer in 2024 confirmed that Britain would not make two scheduled payments to Rwanda.

The ruling was unanimous regarding the 2026 payment and passed by majority for the 2025 installment.

The scheme, introduced by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, aimed to send asylum seekers arriving illegally in the UK to Rwanda for processing and potential resettlement. Starmer's government cancelled the policy shortly after taking office, describing it as a costly failure.

The UK government said the tribunal had ruled in its favor on all grounds. Rwanda said it respected the decision and considered the matter closed.

The controversial plan faced repeated legal challenges and was ruled unlawful by the UK Supreme Court in 2023 over human rights concerns. Despite hundreds of millions of pounds spent on the program, only four migrants were voluntarily relocated to Rwanda before the agreement was abandoned.
