The United Kingdom will provide enriched uranium for Ukraine's nuclear power plants and impose new sanctions on Russia, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced ahead of a G7 session focused on the war in Ukraine.

Starmer condemned what he described as Russia's "brutal strikes" on Ukraine and said London would intensify efforts to support Kyiv while targeting the financial resources funding Moscow's military campaign.

Under the plan, around £210 million ($285 million) in export financing will enable British uranium supplier Urenco to provide enriched uranium to Ukraine's state nuclear energy company Energoatom.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening Ukraine's energy security ahead of future winters as the country continues to face infrastructure attacks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to join G7 discussions on European security and the war, while French President Emmanuel Macron has called for increased pressure on Russia and continued Western support for Ukraine.
