The UK government has announced plans to impose sanctions on human trafficking gangs responsible for sending migrants across the English Channel in fragile boats.

The move, unveiled on Wednesday, marks the latest effort to curb these perilous journeys.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the measures, including travel bans and asset freezes, will target the illicit financial networks enabling traffickers to exploit vulnerable individuals.

Speaking firmly, Starmer declared that criminal gangs pose a threat to global security and must be treated as terrorist networks.

The proposed sanctions, pending parliamentary approval, are expected to come into effect within a year.

The Labour-led government, elected in July, has pledged to dismantle the criminal networks that annually send thousands of migrants on dangerous crossings through one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.

However, questions remain about the effectiveness of these measures. UK authorities can only freeze assets located within the country, while many traffickers operate outside British jurisdiction.
