The United Kingdom plans to ban children under 16 from using major social media platforms, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledging to introduce legislation by the end of the year and enforce the measure from early 2027.

The proposed ban would apply to platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube, and X, as the government seeks to address growing concerns over the impact of social media on children's mental health and online safety.

Starmer argued that many social media platforms are designed to be addictive and contribute to declining well-being among young users, describing the move as a necessary step to protect children online.

The proposal follows similar initiatives in countries such as Australia, Canada, Brazil, and Indonesia. Messaging services, including WhatsApp, would be exempt from the restrictions.

The plan has received strong support from child safety campaigners and parents, with polls indicating overwhelming public backing. However, major technology companies have warned that blanket bans could push teenagers toward less regulated online spaces.

If approved, the legislation would mark one of the most far-reaching social media restrictions for minors introduced by a major Western economy.
