UK Sends Small Naval Team to Middle East

The United Kingdom has sent a small team of eight sailors to the Middle East instead of deploying warships, according to a report by The Telegraph, in what analysts describe as a very limited response to calls for stronger military presence in the region.

The sailors, part of the Royal Navy’s Mine and Threat Exploitation Group (MTXG), were deployed from Portsmouth to Bahrain in February, days before the US-Israeli military operation against Iran began.

The team specializes in mine detection using advanced drone technology capable of identifying and destroying naval mines remotely. However, the system has never been tested in real combat conditions.

Defense sources told the newspaper that the small deployment cannot be compared with the larger British military presence the UK once maintained in the Gulf. Another source questioned what such a small unit could realistically achieve.

The report also cited criticism from US circles, with a source close to President Donald Trump suggesting Washington can no longer rely on British military support during the conflict with Iran.

Possible options discussed in the UK include deploying a Type 23 frigate such as HMS Somerset or HMS St Albans, the destroyer HMS Duncan, or sending the Astute-class submarine HMS Anson, believed to be operating in the Indian Ocean.

Britain is also considering sending thousands of Octopus interceptor drones and accelerating plans to deploy next-generation unmanned mine-clearing vessels developed with France.

Trump recently urged several countries, including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the UK, to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz to help secure global shipping routes. However, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reportedly ruled out sending British warships for the mission.
