UK Secures 2 Mln Doses of Moderna's COVID-19 Vaccine

Today, the UK government announced that it secured extra two million Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine doses according to Business Insider.

The announcement came in a governmental press released by Matt Hancock, the Health and Social Care Secretary.

This addition brought the total number of UK secured doses of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to almost 7 million.

Considered one of the long-waited vaccines, Moderna's vaccine is in the final stages of phase 3 of clinical trials, alongside Novavax, AstraZeneca, Pfizer.

"With a wide range of vaccine candidates in our portfolio, we stand ready to deploy a vaccine should they receive approval from our medicines regulator, starting with those who will benefit most," the statement added.

It is worthy to mention that the Pfizer vaccine could not be approved this week, according to The Financial Times.

Regarding the secured number of dozes from other kinds of vaccines, the UK has ordered 100 million doses from AstraZeneca, 60 Million from Nocavax, 60 million from Valneva, 60 million from GSK, Sanofi Pasteur, 40 million from Pfizer, and 30 million from Janssen.

In the same context, hospital staff, doctors, and nurses will be the first to receive doses from the promising vaccines after the final governmental approvals.

Furthermore, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson appointed Nadhim Zahawi, Minister for Business and Industry, to supervise the UK plan to distribute the upcoming vaccines globally.

Shortly, he said: “A big responsibility and a big operational challenge but absolutely committed to making sure we can roll out vaccines quickly – saving lives and livelihoods and helping us build back better,” according to The Guardian. 

It is worthy to mention that the UK's ongoing COVID-19 lockdown will be ended on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, a vote will be held regarding the strict restrictions taking in the UK amid the outbreak of the second wave of the pandemic.

However, the move is expected to keep most of the country in "higher-risk tiers," according to Business Insider.
