The United Kingdom has recorded its hottest day ever for the meteorological spring season after temperatures in London soared to 34.8 degrees Celsius.
The extreme heat marked one of the warmest May days in British history, with temperatures running 10 to 15 degrees above seasonal averages across much of the country.
Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said the unusually high temperatures were affecting large parts of the UK amid an intense early summer heatwave.
