UK Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation after 6 weeks of taking office, in a speech a short time ago.

Truss confirmed in her speech that there will be a leadership election within a week, according to the BBC.

"I came into office at a time of great economic and international instability," she said. "Families and businesses were worried about how to pay their bills, Putin's illegal war in Ukraine threatens the security of our whole continent and our country has been held back for too long by low economic growth."

"I have therefore spoken to his majesty the king to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party."

"I will remain as prime minister until a successor is chosen," she concluded.

According to Truss, her government paid the energy bills, as well as low-growth taxes.

These statements come after 1922 Committee Chairman Sir Graham Brady entered Downing Street for a crisis meeting with the Prime Minister, followed by Party Chairman Jake Perry.
