UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Monday that he intends to step down, pledging to ensure a smooth and orderly transition of power.

Starmer said he had informed King Charles III of his decision and will remain in office until a successor is chosen, a process expected to conclude by September.

The ruling Labour Party is set to open nominations for its leadership contest on July 9, with the new party leader expected to become the UK's next prime minister.

The resignation comes less than two years after Labour secured a parliamentary majority, amid declining approval ratings and growing internal pressure on Starmer's leadership.

Andy Burnham is widely seen as a leading contender to replace Starmer after strengthening his political standing in recent months.

If confirmed, Starmer's departure would pave the way for Britain to appoint its seventh prime minister in just over a decade, marking another major shift in the country's political landscape.
