The US Department of Defense has drawn up a plan to deploy 1,000 National Guard troops to Louisiana to support law enforcement operations in urban centers, according to documents reported by The Washington Post on Saturday.

The proposal, drafted under President Donald Trump’s administration, outlines a mission for National Guard units to bolster policing efforts in cities such as New Orleans and Baton Rouge, despite nationwide declines in violent crime rates.

Trump has repeatedly sought to make crime a central political issue, often criticizing Democrat-led municipalities. His stance has sparked protests, including a demonstration of several thousand people in Washington, D.C., last week.

The Pentagon plan, which would extend through 30 September 2026, envisions National Guard forces supplementing local law enforcement in high-crime neighborhoods.

According to the documents, the troops could also assist in anti-drug operations and provide logistical and communications support to state and municipal authorities.

The deployment, however, depends on a formal request from Louisiana’s Republican governor, Jeff Landry. It remains unclear whether federal and state officials will approve the measure.

While the Pentagon confirmed the authenticity of the documents to The Washington Post, it declined to comment on their contents. The White House, Pentagon, and governor’s office have yet to respond to Reuters’ requests for comment, and the report has not been independently verified.

Last week, Trump signaled he might authorize federal troop deployments to Louisiana to combat crime, following similar actions taken in Washington, D.C.
