The British government is set to introduce tighter visa restrictions aimed at reducing the number of legal migrant workers, as Prime Minister Keir Starmer responds to mounting public discontent over immigration and rising support for the populist Reform Party.
According to sources familiar with the proposal, the upcoming immigration policy statement will include stricter criteria for graduate-level applicants seeking skilled worker visas, as well as new limitations on visas for low-skilled workers.
The Home Office also intends to revise deportation and removal regulations, making it easier to expel foreign nationals convicted of crimes within the UK. These measures are seen as part of a broader effort to regain control over immigration numbers amid increasing strain on public services.
Prime Minister Starmer has pledged to lower migration levels following public backlash that intensified after the Labor Party assumed power last summer.
The issue quickly sparked right-wing protests and was a key factor in the Reform Party’s recent local election gains under Nigel Farage’s leadership.
On Sunday, the Home Office announced the formation of a specialized task force to assess which sectors are overly reliant on foreign labor.
One key proposal includes granting temporary visas to low-skilled workers only when there is strong evidence of a domestic labour shortage, and only if employers commit to investing in local workforce development and increasing UK employment rates.
