Miatta Fahnbulleh, the UK Minister of State for International Development, has resigned from government while calling for Prime Minister Keir Starmer to consider stepping down and allow for a managed leadership transition.
In her resignation, Fahnbulleh urged the prime minister to set out an orderly plan for handing over leadership, arguing that a new team should be given the opportunity to deliver the government’s promised reforms.
Starmer has rejected calls to resign, telling senior ministers that the government must continue to focus on governing and implementing its agenda despite political pressure.
The resignation comes after a difficult electoral period for Labour, with the party facing declining support and increased scrutiny over its leadership direction.
Starmer has previously pledged to rebuild public trust and maintain policy continuity, including strengthening the UK’s engagement with Europe.
He has also acknowledged public frustration with politics and declining confidence in government performance.
