UK Prime Minister (PM) Boris Johnson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen agreed on Wednesday to extend the Brexit negotiations until next Sunday, according to "the Guardian".
This decision came after a three-hour summit that brought them together on Wednesday in Brussels.
The British newspaper pointed out that despite the nine-month tumultuous talks between the EU and UK, it was said that 'very large gaps' remained between the two parties.
The two leaders said that they should reach a deal or no deal outcome by next Sunday, with pressure on both parties to find time for parliamentary approval.
Downing Street revealed that the meeting in Brussels was 'frank'; a diplomatic term referring to the heated conversation, according to the Guardian. Yet, the EU commission president, Von der Leyen, tweeted: “We had a lively and interesting discussion on the state of play on outstanding issues.
"We understand each other's positions," she said. "Still too far. The two sides should meet again to try to resolve these issues. We will reach a decision by the end of the weekend (Sunday)."
