Rosie Dyas, the British Government Spokesperson for the Middle East and North Africa, emphasized that Egypt serves as a critical pillar of stability in the region, managing a wide array of overlapping geopolitical crises including Gaza, Sudan, and the ongoing diplomatic friction between the United States and Iran.

Speaking during an exclusive interview on Thursday, Dyas outlined the United Kingdom's primary foreign policy positions regarding recent diplomatic breakthroughs and escalating humanitarian challenges across the region.

Welcoming the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding

The British spokesperson explicitly welcomed the newly signed memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran, underscoring that British foreign policy remains firmly rooted in backing diplomatic initiatives to secure a comprehensive, peaceful resolution.

"Our immediate priority is initiating active political negotiations to transform this temporary memorandum of understanding into a sustainable, long-term treaty," Dyas stated.

While acknowledging the deep-seated strategic partnership and historic multi-sector alliance between the UK and the United States, Dyas noted that a strong alliance does not preclude occasional differences in perspective on specific tactical approaches.

Ensuring Freedom of Navigation in the Strait of Hormuz

A central focus for the British government remains the unconditional restoration of maritime transit routes. Dyas stated that the UK views the Strait of Hormuz as a vital international trade artery. The prolonged closure of this waterway has severely exacerbated global food insecurity and disrupted international oil and gas distribution markets.

To address this, the United Kingdom is actively collaborating with its North Atlantic Treaty Organization partners to construct an actionable, highly efficient naval operational blueprint. The planned maritime missions will be strictly defensive and executed in direct coordination with Gulf states and Iran, specifically prioritizing multilateral mine-clearing initiatives to ensure zero-tariff, unconditional transit through the waterway.

Solidarity with Lebanon and Peace Implementation

Turning to the situation in the Levant, the spokesperson expressed profound British solidarity with the Lebanese people following targeted military strikes on domestic civilian populations and critical infrastructure.

The UK continues to urge both Hezbollah and Israeli authorities to adhere strictly to the established ceasefire framework. To maintain national sovereignty, the British government is working closely with international partners to exert diplomatic pressure on all factions while providing direct logistical support to the Lebanese Armed Forces as the sole legitimate defense institution within the country.

De-escalating the Catastrophic Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan

Describing the situation in Sudan as the single worst humanitarian crisis currently unfolding on Earth, Dyas called upon all warring factions to implement an immediate cessation of hostilities.

The United Kingdom is closely aligning its diplomatic strategy with Egypt to push for a negotiated political settlement. The joint effort aims to exert pressure on combatants to halt the fighting while demanding full legal accountability for factions committing severe human rights violations in the besieged city of El Fasher.

To alleviate widespread suffering, Dyas highlighted that the British government has allocated an emergency humanitarian relief fund valued at approximately 146 million British Pounds to deliver vital food, shelter, and medical essentials to displaced Sudanese citizens.
