The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defense has announced a landmark allocation of £5 billion ($6.62 billion) to accelerate the development of military drones for the British Armed Forces over the next four years, marking the largest investment of its kind in the country’s history.

The funding will be included in the government’s Defense Investment Plan, which the ministry described as a strategic effort to modernize the armed forces through advanced unmanned systems and next-generation military technology.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to outline further details of the Defense Investment Plan in a speech on Tuesday, including broader measures aimed at increasing and speeding up defense spending across key military sectors.

According to the ministry, the plan’s publication was delayed by six months due to a funding shortfall.

The announcement comes amid reports that the government has shifted priorities away from replacing ageing Royal Navy vessels, instead focusing investment on unmanned and autonomous defense capabilities.
