The UK government has announced a new partnership between its security agencies and social media companies to monitor online content that encourages illegal migration to the UK.
According to Downing Street, the partnership, involving the UK National Crime Agency and companies such as "Meta" (formerly known as Facebook), "TikTok," and "Twitter," aims to target content related to human trafficking.
This includes offers for fake documentation, discounts on group migration, free seats for children, and false claims regarding safe passage.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated, “To stop the boats, we have to tackle the business model of vile people smugglers at source”
He added, “That means clamping down on their attempts to lure people into making these illegal crossings and profit from putting lives at risk.”
“This new commitment from tech firms will see us redouble our efforts to fight back against these criminals, working together to shut down their vile trade,” Sunak emphasized.
However, the opposition Labour Party's spokesperson on home affairs, Yvette Cooper, considered this action to be woefully inadequate and long overdue, accusing the government of having no clue how to fix the chaos they have caused.
