With 29.4% of ballots counted, the incumbent Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has won 63.9% of the vote compared to Robert Kyagulanyi (aka Bobi Wine) with 28.4%, according to the electoral commission.

The 76-year-old  Ugandan President, says he is standing for stability, while the opposition leader  Bobi Wine, says he represents the younger generation is one of the world's youngest countries.

Earlier, election commission chief Simon Byabakama said the vote had been peaceful, hailing it as a success.

Bobi Wine says soldiers have stormed his home as Uganda counts vote, tweeting "we are under siege."

“We are under siege,” the pop star turned politician tweeted. “The military has jumped over the fence and has now taken control of our home.”

Votes are counted in Uganda’s most keenly watched election in years, while opposition figures said the vote had been marred by fraud and violence.

With a third of the votes counted, Museveni had more than 65% of the tallied ballots and was ahead of Bobi Wine in almost every region.

Bobi Wine, one of 10 opposition challengers, had gained about a quarter of the vote, according to Uganda’s electoral body.

Lt Col Deo Akiiki, Uganda’s deputy military spokesperson, said the soldiers were at Bobi Wine’s house to protect him.

“As a presidential candidate, do you want his security to be compromised? It’s not a deployment to arrest him. It's a deployment to keep his security as any other presidential candidate has. It’s simple as that.”

Bobi Wine, who has galvanized a mass movement of young people challenging the president’s 34-year rule, said at a press conference on Friday morning that Ugandans should reject the results.

“I am very confident that we defeated the dictator by far,” he said. “The people of Uganda voted massively for change of leadership from a dictatorship to a democratic government.
