Uganda's Ministry of Health confirmed on Tuesday that an Ebola outbreak has been detected in the capital, Kampala, following the first reported deaths from the virus earlier this week.
The initial case involved a nurse working at the Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, who first sought treatment at various medical facilities after experiencing symptoms similar to those of a fever.
The nurse's condition worsened, leading to multiple organ failure, and he passed away at Mulago Hospital on January 29. Post-mortem samples confirmed that the nurse had contracted the Sudan strain of the Ebola virus.
Ebola, a highly contagious hemorrhagic fever, spreads through direct contact with infected individuals' bodily fluids and tissues. Symptoms include severe headaches, vomiting blood, muscle aches, and bleeding.
The Ugandan health authorities now focus on containing the outbreak, urging citizens to follow strict hygiene measures to prevent further spread.
The government has initiated heightened surveillance and is working closely with international health organizations to control the situation and provide support.
