The Artificial Intelligence Center of the Emirati "G42" group launched an open-source linguistic model in Arabic, under the name "Jais", in a move that would compete with "ChatGPT".
According to the Emirates News Agency, “Jais,” which is named after the highest peak in the Emirates, is based on “13 billion indicators” and was trained on a newly developed data set that “includes 395 billion symbols in Arabic and English.”
This model was trained using “Condor Galaxy,” a supercomputer powered by artificial intelligence, with multiple “exaflops” computing power (one million trillion calculations per second), designed in cooperation between “G42” and “Cerebras Systems,” according to the same source.
This model gives more than 400 million Arabic speakers the opportunity to explore the latent capabilities of generative AI.
This announcement comes at a time when G42, backed by Mubadala Investment and Silver Lake, is establishing a $10 billion fund with a focus on technology investments in emerging markets.
G42 has operations spanning energy, healthcare and autonomous vehicles. Last year, the company launched a joint project with Sinopharm, based in Beijing, to manufacture the first Chinese vaccine outside the country.
It also became the first Emirati company to open an office in Israel after normalizing relations in the so-called “Abraham Accords.
