For the second time in two-year tenure, the United Arab Emirates has assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council for a month, placing interfaith dialogue, climate change, peace and regional security on its agenda.
“We are pleased to assume the presidency of the UN Security Council for the second time during our term and fulfill our commitments," said Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, permanent representative of the UAE to the UN.
The presidency of the Security Council is a rotating one-month position for the 15 members of the council, of which 10 are non-permanent members. The UAE is in the second year of its two-year term on the council. It previously served as president of the council in March 2022.
During the month of June, the UAE will convene three high-level meetings of the council seeking to promote interfaith dialogue, tackle regional challenges and address the impacts of climate change on conflicts around the world, Emirati official news agency WAM reported.
"Our signature events will aim to highlight and build upon these critical priorities among council members and the wider international community,” stated Nusseibeh.
The UAE will also seek to increase UN-Arab League cooperation in agreement with other members of the Security Council.
“By using all available tools, we can promote dialogue and bridge the views of council members so that we can create consensus on the most urgent global issues and fully implement the council’s mandate," Nusseibeh added.
The UAE will also convene a ministerial-level briefing on the values of human fraternity in promoting and sustaining peace.
"The worrying rise in intolerance, hate speech, racism, and extremism undoubtedly fuel violence and divide communities,” Nusseibeh stressed.
“As the world faces the highest number of armed conflicts since 1945, this event could not be timelier.”
