On Wednesday, the Pentagon revealed that U.S. State Department has approved the potential sale of 3,000 ultra-precise guided munitions to Saudi Arabia in a deal worth up to $ 290 billion.

The deal comes in the final days of Donald Trump's presidential term.

In a statement, the Pentagon said the deal would include 3,000 GBU-39 small-diameter bombs, containers, support equipment, spare parts, and technical support.

"The proposed deal will improve Saudi Arabia's ability to confront current and future threats by increasing its stockpile of long-range surface-to-air guided munitions," the statement read.

"The size and accuracy of the small-diameter bombs allow for effective munitions that cause less collateral damage," it added.

The Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified the Congress of the potential deal.

Despite approval by the State Department, the notification does not indicate the signing of a contract or the conclusion of negotiations.

the Pentagon said Boeing co. is the main weapons contractor.
