U.S. Calls on Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia to Resolve Dam Crisis

U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan called on Friday evening Heads of State and Government of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia to “work together in solving the Renaissance dam crisis”.

On the occasion of the appointment of an American envoy to the Horn of Africa, Sullivan stated that the U.S. government is ready to “work with allies to promote peace in the Horn of Africa.”

Sullivan also called for an immediate withdrawal of Eritrean forces from the troubled Tigray region in Ethiopia.

On Friday, Washington named diplomat Jeffrey Feltman as envoy to the Horn of Africa, where he will be responsible for burning files, including finding a solution to the issue die crisis in the Ethiopian Tigray region and regional tensions related to the construction of the Renaissance Dam.

Feltman is a seasoned diplomat who served as Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East Affairs and then United Nations Secretary for Political Affairs. Blinken expressed “great concern” about “unstable situation in Ethiopia “, especially because of the conflict in Tigray.

The United States recently raised its rhetoric and “countless reports of rape and other forms of sexual violence” in denounced the northern region of Ethiopia.

Washington welcomed and praised the start of the withdrawal of the Eritrean armed forces from Tigray at the end of March “Role” of US Senator Chris Kunz, who had previously been sent to Ethiopia by President Joe Biden. But US government returned, expressed impatience, and demanded the “immediate” withdrawal of these forces.

On Friday, Khartoum hinted that Addis Ababa will be sued if it continues to fill the dam without a tripartite deal that includes Egypt.

The filling of the dam creates strong tensions between Ethiopia and the two downstream countries (Egypt and Sudan), and the U.S. have tried to mediate the Crisis, which is not yet resolved.
