A powerful typhoon unleashed heavy rainfall across a chain of Japanese islands south of Tokyo on Thursday, prompting government warnings over the risk of landslides and flooding.
According to Japan’s Kyodo News Agency, record levels of rainfall were reported in parts of the Izu Islands, located about 280 kilometers south of the capital.
Hundreds of residents sought refuge in evacuation centers as emergency services monitored rising water levels.
