Two Katyusha rockets were fired at Baghdad's guarded Green Zone early Sunday, according to Iraq's state news agency, which cited security personnel, according to Reuters.

The C-RAM defensive system destroyed one rocket in the air, while the other landed near the zone's events arena, destroying two automobiles, according to the report.

According to the agency, security officers have begun an inquiry to locate the launching site.

According to Reuters, one of the rounds was brought down by the C-RAM system, and none of them landed on the US embassy. There were no American casualties, according to the official.

The Green Zone is home to foreign embassies and government facilities, including the US embassy, and is frequently targeted by rockets fired by forces backed by Iran, according to the US and Iraqi officials.

According to US authorities, Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and Syria may intensify attacks against US soldiers in the coming weeks, in part to commemorate the killings of top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.

On January 2, 2020, the two were slain in Iraq by a US drone attack.
