On Tuesday, two people were killed and 16 others were injured as a train crashed into the platform before derailing at Qalyoub train station in Qalyoubiya governorate, northern Cairo, according to a preliminary toll by the Ministry of Health and population.
In a statement, the health ministry said three of the injured received aid at the site of the crash and three others left the Emergency Department of Qalyoub Specialised Hospital.
The ministry added that the rest of the injured who do not have life-threatening injuries are receiving treatment at the same hospital.
The ministry noted that 20 ambulances were dispatched to the scene of the crash of the train.
The prosecution is investigating the incident.
The train failed to heed the semaphore signal and crashed into the buffer stopper at 7:20pm, which caused the locomotive and the front car to derail, the ENR said.
The injuries took place among passengers who were riding in the cars between the locomotive and the front car, the ENR explained.
Minister of Transport Kamel El-Wazir ordered the immediate formation of a committee to determine the cause of the crash and identify responsible individuals as well as assess the damage.
