Two former officials were sentenced by the Jordanian state security court Monday to 15 years in jail on charges of conspiracy against king Abdullah II and his regime.
Bassem Awadallah, who had served as a top aide to King Abdullah II, and Sharif Hassan bin Zaid, a member of the royal family, were found guilty of sedition and incitement charges.
The Jordanian officials were accused of attempting to destabilize the monarchy of King Abdullah II and to have conspired with Prince Hamzah, the king’s half-brother.
In April, King Abdullah bin Hussain fired the two senior government executives for treason and “loss of trust”, according to international reports. At that time, they were also alleged to have sought foreign assistance.
