In an ambitious step for its space program, Turkiye has announced plans to send two lunar exploration vehicles, named “CHERI”, to the Moon in 2029 using largely homegrown technology, in cooperation with China.

The vehicles, developed with 80% local components at Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ), are designed to withstand the extreme conditions of the Moon’s south pole, where temperatures range from minus 160°C to plus 80°C.

Equipped with advanced artificial intelligence systems, the CHERI rovers will be capable of carrying out precise missions such as 3D mapping of the lunar surface, collecting scientific data, and conducting advanced analyses.

A distinctive feature of the mission is the ability of the two vehicles to communicate with each other and navigate independently without direct human intervention, marking a pioneering milestone in space exploration history.

The project is the result of Turkish-Chinese cooperation. Professor Dr. Ahmet Yozgatlıgil, President of Middle East Technical University, stressed that the initiative reflects the capabilities of Turkish researchers and places Turkiye among the leading nations in space technology.

He added that success in this mission would further strengthen Turkiye's scientific and technological standing on the global stage.
