Turkish Staff Member Injured in Shooting at Sweden's Consult in Izmir

A Turkish staff member at the Swedish consulate in Izmir, Turkey, was injured in a shooting targeted the site, TRT broadcaster reported on Tuesday.

The staff member was shot and seriously injured, the authorities announced.

Izmir Governor revealed that the shooter was arrested and was moved to the province of Agri. The police are investigating the incident.

In the same context, the Swedish Consul General will head to Izmir, tomorrow, to follow up on the investigation and collect more details about the incident, according to the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The ministry added that there are various and continued contact with the Consulate General and its Turkey-based team.

The ministry also revealed that it would not further comment “on the threat to the diplomatic service or what security measures are being taken, as this risks counteracting the purpose of the measures.”

On his side, Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc condemned the attack and said that a criminal investigation was begun.
