ANKARA, AUG 23 (SEE)- Turkish lira tumbled further during Thursday's trading session, marking the country's worst currency crisis since 2001.

The lira slumped 1.44% to a record low at 6.12 lira against the dollar, with the continued confrontation between Turkey and the United States regarding the fate of the American pastor held in Ankara.

The lira has lost 37 percent of its value since the beginning of the year, in a crisis sparked by fears of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's influence over monetary policy and exacerbated by the conflict with Washington.
