Turkey has formally requested an explanation from Google following widespread service outages that disrupted access to several of the tech giant’s platforms on Thursday.

The National Cyber Incidents Response Centre asked Google to provide a technical clarification after users in Turkey and across Europe reported disruptions, according to Deputy Transport and Infrastructure Minister Ömer Fatih Sayan. Writing on Turkish social media platform NSosyal, Sayan confirmed that Google and its Android-linked services were affected.

“We are closely monitoring the situation,” he said, stressing that the outages underscored the importance of developing domestic software and products. He added that Turkey has been working to boost the share of local content in both software and hardware for 5G technology, which currently stands at 60 percent.

Earlier in the day, users across multiple regions – including Africa and Asia – reported sudden failures in accessing Google services such as the search engine, YouTube, and Gmail.

Down detector, a platform that tracks digital service interruptions, logged thousands of complaints, with Gmail outages surpassing 30,000 reports within an hour and YouTube reports exceeding 70,000 over the same period.

Technical reports indicated that the global disruption began at approximately 10:30 a.m. local time on Thursday, September 4. The cause of the outage remains unclear, with conflicting assessments emerging from industry sources.
