Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced Monday a full closure starting from April 29 evening, to curb the spread of the coronavirus outbreak.

During a Cabinet meeting, Erdoğan stated that the lockdown will be ongoing and will last until May 17.

Moreover, he added that restrictions to intercity travel will be imposed and intercity public transport will operate at 50 percent capacity.

Schools will also stop in-person education until the lockdown ends. However, the manufacturing and food sectors will be exempt from the restrictions, the president said.

Turkey is reporting 51,646 new infections on average each day, 86% of the peak, according to Reuters' statistics. There have been 4,629,969 infections and 38,358 coronavirus-related deaths reported in the country since the pandemic began.
