The Tunisian authorities announced that they had arrested dozens of illegal immigrants near the border with Algeria.
Tunisian President Kais Saeed said in previous statements that there is a need for "urgent measures" to address the entry of illegal immigrants from countries in sub-Saharan Africa. "
He warned that this leads to in terms of violence, crimes, and unacceptable practices, in addition to being legally criminal."
Saeed ordered a quick response "at all diplomatic, security and military levels, and the strict application of the law related to the status of foreigners in Tunisia, and the illegal crossing of borders."
Saeed's remarks, during a meeting of the National Security Council, sparked a storm on social media, as well as condemnations from NGOs.
A census dating back to 2021 on the number of migrants from the sub-Saharan region in Tunisia indicates that their number is estimated at 21,000, but there are no recent official statistics on the number of migrants trying to infiltrate the other bank of the Mediterranean.
