Tunisian authorities have launched a major investigation after customs officers intercepted a large quantity of narcotics hidden inside a shipping container arriving from a European country.
The discovery was made at Rades Commercial Port, located south of the capital Tunis, according to local media reports on Sunday.
The drugs, weighing several hundred kilograms, were uncovered following a targeted inspection based on prior intelligence. They were concealed among imported kitchen appliances and cooking equipment.
Officials stated that the shipment was destined for a private company involved in the sale and distribution of household electronic devices.
The National Guard’s Anti-Narcotics Unit in Ben Arous, near the capital, is leading the investigation to identify the networks behind the attempted smuggling.
Tunisian security forces have intensified efforts to dismantle drug trafficking operations across the country.
Data from the General Directorate of the National Guard revealed that nearly 5,000 drug dealers were apprehended in 2024, a sharp increase from 3,165 arrests in 2023.
