Thousands of Tunisians cheered in celebrations on Sunday after mass protests pushed President Kais Saied to suspend parliament and dismiss Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi.

Protesters clashed with security forces, Sunday, during a day of violent protests against the government and the Islamist Ennahda party, which led the Parliament.

Citizens were provoked at the party's handling of the pandemic and the deteriorating economic situation that relies mostly on tourism, which was disrupted by lockdowns.

The Tunisian president decided on Sunday to freeze the Tunisian parliament, suspend all members of parliament, and dismiss Mechichi from his post after mass protests took place in several Tunisian cities.

Saied added that he will assume the presidency of the executive branch with the help of a new prime minister.

Meantime, Tunisia's Parliament Speaker Rached Ghannouchi, who is a pro–Muslim Brotherhood accused the president of "bringing down the revolution".
