Powerful tsunami waves hit coastal areas in Russia’s Kuril Islands and Japan’s northern main island, Hokkaido, following a strong earthquake that struck this morning near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, according to the Associated Press.

The Japanese authorities announced that a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 8 struck an area off the coast of Kamchatka.
As a result, they issued a tsunami warning, with waves potentially reaching up to one meter along the eastern coast facing the Pacific Ocean.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency confirmed that the strong quake took place early in the day and noted that the tsunami's effects could extend to wide areas, including Hokkaido and neighboring regions.
Similarly, authorities in Russia’s Severo-Kurilsk district issued a matching tsunami warning and have already begun evacuating residents from coastal areas, according to Russia’s "RT" channel.
