Small tsunami waves reached parts of Japan on Monday after a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of the Philippines, prompting Japanese authorities to issue tsunami warnings for several coastal areas.

Japan's Meteorological Agency said minor tsunami waves were detected in Okinawa and other Pacific islands, including a 20-centimetre wave recorded on Chichijima Island in the Ogasawara chain, about 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo.

The agency had earlier warned that tsunami waves of up to one meter could reach the Miyako Islands and other areas along Japan's Pacific coast.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake struck at a depth of 55.2 kilometers approximately 26 kilometers southwest of Cabalalan in the Philippines.

This version is more precise and avoids attributing tsunami warnings to U.S. authorities.
