U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that China could "devour and completely destroy" Canada, cautioning against the risks of deepening trade ties between Ottawa and Beijing.
Trump added that any Canadian move toward a broad trade agreement with China would come at a "heavy price," emphasizing that the United States will not stand idly by in the face of what he described as Beijing's attempts to expand through Canada.
The U.S. President stressed that he would impose trade tariffs of up to 100% on Canada if it concludes a trade deal with China or becomes a gateway for exporting Chinese goods to American markets.
Trump further explained that [Mark] Carney would be "wrong" to allow Canada to become a back door for Chinese exports, considering such a move detrimental to the U.S. economy and a threat to the trade balance.
