US President Donald Trump said Walmart should stop trying to blame tariffs for raising its prices, after the company warned it would do so this week.
"Walmart should stop trying to blame tariffs for raising prices across the chain. They made billions of dollars last year, far exceeding expectations," Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Saturday.
He added, "Walmart and China should take the tariffs and not charge their valued customers any of their costs. I will be watching this, and so will yours!!!"
Walmart last week reported strong profit and revenue growth for the past quarter, but warned that tariffs and growing economic turmoil mean even the world's largest retailer can expect to see price increases.
"If you haven't already noticed it, it's going to happen in May, and then it's going to become more apparent," Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey said in an interview Thursday about the price increases.
A Walmart spokesperson did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on Saturday.
Trump's trade war has upended businesses across all sectors. While temporary agreements, including the latest 90-day agreement with China, are expected to ease supply chain pressure in the short term, the crisis has made it difficult for companies to respond or plan.
"Right now, the retail environment is challenging, with prices rising at this pace. We've never seen prices rise at this pace in our history," Rainey said. "However, the magnitude of the tariff increases is so large that retailers cannot absorb them on their own."
Walmart is better positioned than other retailers to weather the challenges. The company's global supply chain allows it to source products from multiple regions, and its scale allows it to negotiate better deals with suppliers. The company announced last month that it plans to maintain its prices to boost market share.
