US President Donald Trump announced plans to deploy 5,000 additional American troops to Poland, citing his strong relationship with newly elected Polish President Karol Nawrocki.
Trump revealed the decision on his Truth Social platform, describing Poland as a key US ally with one of NATO’s highest defense spending levels.
The announcement came shortly after reports that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had unexpectedly cancelled a separate deployment of around 4,000 US troops to Poland, despite military personnel and equipment already beginning to arrive.
The reversal reportedly caused confusion within the Pentagon and concern among European allies.
The move also follows Washington’s recent decision to withdraw 5,000 US troops from Germany amid tensions between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the Iran conflict.
The US currently maintains tens of thousands of troops across Europe as part of its long-standing NATO military presence.
