Trump Threatens Tariffs on Countries Supplying Oil to Cuba

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing tariffs on goods imported from any country that sells or supplies oil to Cuba, a move widely seen as increasing pressure on Mexico.

The order, signed on Thursday, expands Washington’s efforts to further isolate Cuba, which is already subject to strict US economic sanctions. The measure targets countries that help sustain Cuba’s energy supply, effectively threatening their exports to the United States with new trade penalties.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said earlier this week that her government had temporarily halted oil shipments to Cuba. She stressed, however, that the decision was a sovereign one and not taken under pressure from the United States.

Trump has been pushing Mexico to distance itself from the Cuban government as part of a broader strategy aimed at tightening economic and diplomatic isolation of the island.

Separately, Trump said he will announce his nominee to lead the Federal Reserve on Friday, replacing current chair Jerome Powell. Speaking at the Kennedy Center, Trump said the announcement would be made on Friday morning.

The developments underline Trump’s renewed focus on using trade measures and executive authority to advance both foreign policy and domestic economic objectives.
