Former US President Donald Trump warned on Monday that he intends to impose an additional 5 percent tariff on Mexico, escalating ongoing trade tensions between the two countries.
Trump stated on his Truth Social platform that he plans to introduce a 5 percent tariff on Mexico, offering no further details on when the measure would take effect.
At present, Mexican goods can face tariffs of up to 25 percent if they are not covered under the USMCA free trade agreement, which governs trade between the United States, Canada, and Mexico and was implemented during Trump’s first term.
The renewed threat of higher tariffs is adding pressure to US–Mexico trade relations and raising concerns among industries that rely on cross-border supply chains. Analysts warn that any increase in trade barriers could have significant economic consequences for both economies.
