Trump Threatens Canada with 100% Tariffs Over 'Devouring' Trade Deal with China

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a severe ultimatum to Canada, warning that the country faces immediate 100% tariffs on all its exports to the United States if it proceeds with a comprehensive trade agreement with Beijing.

Speaking on the sidelines of international summits, Trump warned that China is positioned to "eat Canada alive" and "completely devour" its economy and social fabric. The president emphasized that the U.S. will not allow Canada to become a "backdoor" or a "drop-off port" for Chinese goods seeking to evade American duties and flood the U.S. market.

A Swift Reversal in Relations The threat marks a sharp escalation in tensions between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. While Trump initially appeared supportive of Carney's diplomatic outreach to Beijing earlier this month, his tone shifted dramatically following Carney’s remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Carney had called for "middle powers" to unite against global hegemony—a move Trump perceived as ungrateful for American protection.

"Canada lives because of the United States," Trump asserted, as he formally withdrew Canada’s invitation to join his newly proposed "Board of Peace," an elite diplomatic circle intended to handle global conflicts.

Economic Stakes If implemented, the 100% tariff would dwarf previous levies, potentially paralyzing Canada’s manufacturing, automotive, and agricultural sectors. Under the proposed Canada-China deal, Canada was set to lower tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) in exchange for China reducing duties on Canadian canola seeds. Trump’s administration argues such a pivot threatens North American security and the integrity of the USMCA trade block.
