Trump Threatens Canada with 100% Tariffs over China Trade Deal

US President Donald Trump has warned Canada that it would face tariffs of up to 100% if it signs a trade agreement with China, escalating tensions in an already fragile global trade environment.

In a message posted on his social media platform Truth Social on Saturday, Trump said Canada would not be allowed to serve as a gateway for Chinese goods into the United States.

“If Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney thinks he can turn Canada into an export route for Chinese goods and products into the United States, he is completely mistaken,” Trump wrote.

He added that if Canada proceeds with a trade agreement with China, a 100% tariff would be imposed immediately on all Canadian goods and products entering the United States.

The warning comes as Trump continues a trade confrontation he has pursued over the past year, targeting what he describes as unfair trade practices and indirect access to the US market.

Earlier this month, Canada entered negotiations aimed at reducing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in exchange for lower Chinese duties on Canadian agricultural products, according to people familiar with the talks. The move has raised concerns in Washington over potential re-routing of Chinese exports through Canadian territory.

Trade analysts say such a tariff threat, if implemented, would have major consequences for cross-border supply chains, given the scale of trade between the United States and Canada and the deep integration of their manufacturing sectors.
